Solvent Extraction of Cobalt and Nickel From Nigerian Lateritic Soil

ABSTRACT:In this study, a hydrometallurgical treatment involving the solvent extraction and recovery of cobalt and nickel from hydrochloric acid leached solution of laterite using Cyanex272 and 8-hydroxylquinoline, both diluted in kerosene, has been investigated. The results showed that Cyanex272 was selective for cobalt in 4M HCl; while 8-hydroxylquinoline was found to be selective for nickel. The average percentage of cobalt extracted by Cyanex272 was 94.71% while 99.98% of nickel was extracted by 8-hydroxylquinoline. 1M HCl was also found to be effective for the stripping of cobalt and nickel from both Cyanex272 and 8-hydroxylquinoline.
