O. M. Folarin, B. A. Akinola
KEYWORDS: Trichosanthes cucumerina, fatty acid, seed oil, unsaturation, infra-red spectroscopy.

ABSTRACT:

The  seed  oil  from  Trichosanthes  cucumerina  was  extracted  by  soxhlet  using  petroleum  ether  (4060oC)  and  characterised  by  gas  chromatograph  and  infra-red  spectroscopy.  The  fatty  acid constituents  of  the  oil  are  palmitic(9.15%);  stearic(14.02%);  oleic(19.29%);  linoleic(26.42%); linolenic(26.46%)  and  eicosatrienoic(4.33%).  The  presence  of  unsaturation  in  the  oil  was  confirmed by  infra-red  peaks  at  1643  and  3012cm-1,  and  attributed  to  olefinic  C=C  and  C–H  stretching vibrations respectively.
