Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy Analysis of A Chromate- Phosphate Conversion Coating.

ABSTRACT:Scanning and Transmission electron microscopy examination and subsequent analysis with attached EDX have been performed on a chromate phosphate conversion coating on aluminium-0.2%Fe alloy. The initial lustrous surface, comprising of grain features in the alloy was replaced by cracked chromate - phosphate coating materials over the treatment period employed in this investigation. The cracks predominantly developed on relatively thick coatings over the alloy substrate where coating materials are a mixture of compounds based on chromium, phosphorous and aluminium. EDX analysis revealed that the coating is basically composed of chromium phosphate.
