The Nutrient Composition of The Larva of Raffia Palm Weevil: Rhynchophorus Phoenicis.

ABSTRACT:

The  nutrient  composition  of  the  larva  of  raffia  palm  weevil  has  been  investigated.  The  study  revealed  the presence  of  high  protein  content  (44.68±0.02%),  fat  (31.46±0.02%).  It  has  reasonable  values  of potassium  (89.00±0.75mg/100g),  magnesium  (60.60±1.52mg/100g),  sodium  (77.51±0.46mg/100g), phosphorus  (38.71±0.123mg/100g)  but  low  values  of  calcium  (18.7±2.3mg/100g).The  presence  of  such essential  elements  as  zinc  (3.30±0.10mg/100g)  and  iron  (36.53±0.01mg/100g)  are  also  detected.  The Ca/P  ratio  (0.54)  and  the  Na/K  ratio  (0.87)  are  good  and    indicate  that  consumption  of  the  larva  has  no adverse  health  implications  associated  with  high  blood  pressure.  It  has  moderate  values  of  vitamin  A (479.7±0.26  IU/100g),  riboflavin  (5.9±0.69mg/kg),  thiamin  (5.1±0.11mg/kg)  and  niacin  (1.9±0.11mg/kg). The larva is therefore, a very rich source of essential nutrients.
