ABSTRACT:

Gum Arabic is a highly branched polymer which is known to form weak and brittle adhesive films. In order to improve its flexibility and strength, the gum was modified with urea, zinc oxide and urea/zinc oxide. The various formulations were applied on glass and ceramic substrates and the strength of paper-substrate bond was determined. Low urea concentrations enhanced adhesive strength on ceramic but at higher concentrations, adhesive strength on ceramic was reduced. Zinc oxide increased viscosity and adhesive strength of gum Arabic and also enhanced adhesion on ceramic. Low bond strength was obtained on glass due to localized stresses in adhesive film. Urea/zinc oxide reduced adhesive strength of gum Arabic at all concentrations
