KEYWORDS: LAKES OF THE NIGER DELTA FLOOD PLAIN I. CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FIVE LAKES ( AKPIDE, EGBEDIDI, ESIRIBI, ABOH AND EGBINYA) IN BAYELSA STATE, NIGERIA.
ABSTRACT:
The water quality of five lakes in the eastern part of the Niger Delta flood plains was examined by analysis of their physico-chemical parameters using standard methods. Sixteen parameters were determined for thirty water samples. The parameters measured were pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, total solids, total dissolved solid, total alkalinity and total hardness. Other parameters included Dissolved Oxygen, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand and the anions NO3- , PO43-, SO42- Cl-. Results showed that the physiochemical indices were all below or within the permissible levels set by WHO and FEPA standards. These lakes in the interior of Bayelsa State are not easily accessible and hardly impacted by human activities. They are mainly fishing lakes belonging to families in Biseni clan, Yenegoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.OTHER ITEMS THAT MIGHT INTEREST YOU
