KEYWORDS: Syntactic Characteristics, Fulfulde, Ideophones

ABSTRACT:

The paper examines the syntactic characteristics of Fulfulde ideophones. It employs face-to-face interview which involves extraction of data through structured questions addressed directly to respondents and their answers tape recorded. We equally used intuition of the researchers as native speakers. Ideophones, in Fulfulde and in most languages, do not usually enter into phrase structure construction with other words like adjectives to form compound words or phrases. Each can fall within one, or simultaneously within more than one word class, or it can behave in some respects like members of one word-class, and in other respects like the members of another. The study reveals that Fulfulde ideophones cannot normally be syntactically modified. They can function as adverbs, nouns, adjectives, qualifiers, or modifiers.
