ABSTRACT:

Youths or graduates represent very important stakeholders in any society. These do not only stand for the future of Nigeria, but also are major stakeholders and useful resource in the nation building. For them to become useful human resource in their country, they must be gainfully employed which hinges on the level of the education attained. We do no teach people to fish when there are no fish in their area meaning that there is we need for theoretical and practical education, entrepreneurship training, encouragement of vocational schools, technical training, education that will help our graduate acquire skill and knowledge to support their life after graduation without waiting for white collar job that are limited. There is need to reinvigorate and overhaul the entire educational system at all levels to create room for entrepreneurial education so the Nigerian tertiary education graduates will become job creators rather than job seekers. This is what this paper seeks to articulate, prior to the emergence of the current global economic crisis, which has been popularly tagged "Global Economic Meltdown". Majority of the African economies; especially developing ones like Nigeria have been facing one economic problem or the other, Nigeria has now found herself in a serious unemployment situation which could be traced to several factors but of note is the discoveries of Oil and Gas in commercial quantities, bad leaders and incessant incursion of the military into the political power which has led the country backward economically. This has made many industries to forcefully lay- off large number of employees owing to inability to break even. There is also the ban on recruitment which has worsened the employment situation of university graduate in the country. This paper argues that to forestall further deterioration of our unemployment situation, there is need to restructure the curriculum to suit education for self reliance.
