Determination of Synergistic Effect and Activity Index of Solenostemon Monostachyus and Ocimum Gratissimum On Selected Bacteria
The determination of synergistic effect and activity index of Solenostemon monostachyus and Ocimum gratissimum on selected bacteria was investigated. The phytochemical analysis of the acetone, ethanol and aqueous leaves extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, phenolics, tannins, essential oils, glycosides, lectins and phytates. Equal mixtures of the two leaves’ extracts were used to determine the synergistic effects of the leaves’ extracts using agar well diffusion technique. The activity index was determined in comparison of the tested extracts to standard antibiotic used as control (ciprofloxacin). The results showed that, the extracts were active against the tested microorganisms; Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The inhibition produced by Ciprofloxacin (0.05%) was significantly higher (P<0.05 and P< 0.01). The diameter zones of inhibition of the mixture of the two leaves extracts were higher than the diameter of the inhibition of the individual leaf extract. The activity index was more pronounced in acetone and ethanol extract of the two leaves than the aqueous extracts. The activities of the leaves extracts were found to be dose dependent.
