Role of Social Studies As An Imperative For Socio-Economic Problems In Nigeria
Nigeria is in crisis of moral degeneration as this is evident in the myriad of socio-economic problems ravaging the society at all levels, including all aspects of life. It seems the various agencies with the responsibility of inculcating moral values in the society have faltered in that regard. With this lack of morality among the vast majority of the citizens, this paper suggests the overhauling of moral education in all levels of our educational system using Social Studies to reverse the trend of moral degeneration in the society. This paper therefore, discusses the causes of moral degeneration in Nigeria, the role of Social Studies in overhauling moral education, how to teach moral values: the Social Studies teacher's curriculum task; its curriculum implication as well as conclusion of the work; Recommendations in the paper include: Evaluation of teacher's competence on the teaching of moral values should be regularly carried out by the Ministry of Education and recruitment of Social Studies teachers, should be critically assessed as to whether they possess moral principles that are to shape and edify the learners since the learners see them as role models.
